GERRY COSBY-A TRADITION OF
EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION AND QUALITY
Gerry Cosby started his incredible love affair with sports almost from
birth. He enjoyed playing all sports and displayed a tremendous aptitude
in tennis, golf, ice hockey, baseball and basketball. Hockey soon
became his main interest, and his skill as an ice hockey goaltender
became well known. His first experience on the ice occurred in 1928
when the manager of the Boston Tigers asked Gerry to fill in for an
injured goaltender. Although his first few days in the net were rocky,
he persevered and worked hard to become one of the best American born
goaltenders in history. In 1933 he was the goaltender for the only United States Ice Hockey team to win a gold medal in the world championships. In 1935 he
was voted most valuable player while tending goal for the Wembley Lions
in England. In 1936 he was asked to join the United States Olympic
team, but due to a previous work commitment he was unable to accept. He
played for the NY Rovers from the late 1930's to the early 1940's, while
also serving as the practice goalie for the NY Rangers and NY
Americans. In April 1997 Gerry Cosby was inducted posthumously into
the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame for his outstanding goal
tending on the international level.
Gerry Cosby's interest in hockey did not stop there. He was fascinated
by the science of hockey and its equipment. This led to many
innovations that are common place to the game today. He incorporated
the fiber thumb and wrist into the hockey glove, and redesigned the
hockey jersey to allow equipment to be worn underneath. As for the
hockey helmet, he instituted the adjustable size and suspension style.
The ankle protector, cellular rubber goalie equipment, and Velcro straps for
hockey pads were also his ideas. In conjunction with a stick
manufacturer, he also worked on laminated shafts and fiber glass
wrapped blades.
In addition to his innovations in hockey, Gerry has designed a complete
line of football shoulder pads. These not only prevent original injury,
but can be custom made to protect a previously injured area. Cosby pads
are designed to allow the player maximum mobility while insuring that
the impact from any contact will be dispersed throughout the pads.
Gerry Cosby's products are worn by many players at all levels of
organized football.
The full line of custom made equipment bags that are offered by Gerry
Cosby are yet another of his innovative ideas. These bags are designed
with both style and durability. From pee wees to professionals, these
bags have travelled all over the world.
